I just read an online article by the Associated Press on Utah's idea of having four day work weeks. As one who speaks with the voice of a sixty-hour-a-week work load, I give them a standing ovation.
"The finest workers in stone are not copper or steel tools, but the gentle touches of air and water working at their leisure with a liberal allowance of time." ~ Henry David Thoreau
So maybe we don't have the time of wind and water, but wouldn't life be richer if we all had a little more time to just be?
Perhaps I have it all wrong. Perhaps we have simply become a lazy bunch of over-weight, no good, immoral couch potatoes that aren't doing nearly as much as we should. If we were given the extra time, how many of us would truly use that time beneficially? If we were all given four-day work weeks, would beer and alcohol sells, drunk-driving, homicides, teen pregnancy, STDs, and a lack of education simply rise?
Do we truly not know how to handle extra time? After all, "Idle hands are the devil's workshop." But there was a time when things like this didn't seem to bother us so much. There really was a time when T.V. did not exist, toys were few, and books brought magic.
Could an extra day give us back that kind of contentment? I believe that life is what you make it, but you can only work with what you've been given. Anything beyond that is a gift from God, and right now I'm praying that the trend in Utah makes its way here real soon.
